Challenge of Literature

Challenge of Literature 2012

If you are here for the Tiny Tin Challenge, go here.

I am very happy to be participating in the Challenge of Literature Blog Hop hosted by Erin from Tesori Trovati Jewelry today.  I have always loved to read.  Books were my own private world when I was growing up, I can't remember a time when I wasn't reading everything I could get my hands on.  It seems to run in my family too, my Mom, one sister and my Aunt all love to read.  Books fly between all of us, sometimes it's hard to keep straight what home they should go back to!  When Erin announced this challenge, I didn't hesitate to enter for one second.  I even knew which books I'd pick.

One ring to rule them all
One ring to find them
One ring to bring them all
And in the darkness bind them

I read the Hobbit in 5th or 6th grade, then The Lord of the Rings in 7th.  They were and continue to be my favorite books.  I could probably recite most of them from memory.
I wasn't sure what I wanted to make for this challenge, but I kept going back to the leaf brooch they were given in Lothlórien by Galadriel.  That and Galadriel's ring have always been my two favorite pieces of jewelry from the books.  I didn't think my wire wrapping was good enough yet to try the ring, so I went for the brooch.  It's the first thing I've made from polymer clay.  It is bigger than I wanted it to be, so I think I'll be making another smaller one, but I'm pleased with the way it turned out for my first attempt in a new medium.

I used translucent clay with the mix I did for the green and pearl ex watercolors to paint the veins and around the edge.  I wish we would have had some sun today because it does sparkle nicely.

Here is the brooch from the movie Return of the King.  They did a wonderful job capturing it the way it was described in the books.

  5. I was never a reader, except in elementary school. I was never encouraged to read, and we didn't have books around the house. I envy those who do love to read.

I love your polymer leaf, and to make it into a brooch is a fabulous idea!

  10. Oh the pendant is beautiful! I have read all of these books and loved them dearly. The Hobbit was my first novel, I was 7 when I read it, and it has always been so very dear to me. This is exactly how I imagined it would be :)

  11. You did a wonderful job on the leaf! Can't wait to see your second attempt!

I am trying to get through Lord of the Rings. I love the movies so much my boyfriend was like "Why don't you read the books?" So I started... 3 years ago. Lol. I never made it out of the Shire with the paperback. I got the audio book last month and we've JUST left Tom Bombadil's house... slowly but surely, I'll make it through. I love the book. But my brain, for some odd reason, wanders with this series. Siiiiiiigh...

  12. We read the books when my husband was recovering from a traumatic brain injury so these books hold many dear memories for me. I love your leaf and smiled because another hopper also made a leaf to embody what these books meant to her :-)

  14. Very cool! You know I have never read these books. Maybe it is time to start with the Hobbit and see where that might lead me. I love the way you challenged yourself to use a new medium as well! Very inspired and something special to recall the friends that you read and who become real to you! Thank you for playing with me in this Challenge! Enjoy the day. Erin

  15. The Tolkien books are simply phenomenal. I have read and reread them all every few years... I like your leaf - inspired by the movie interpretation. I wonder what your imagination would have envisioned without the movie influence?! Nice work!

    1. It's been great to see how many people also love them. I honestly don't know what it would have looked like without the movie influence, but I did think they did a good job on most of the jewelry from the books. Thank you!

  17. I tried reading the Hobbit several times as it was on our shelves growing up. It never grabbed me. That's a commentary more on the genre as a whole not these books specifically. I'm so glad you went for it with polymer for the first time, that's awesome! If you do go to make it again try baking it dropped over two rolls of printer paper, like in the valley between the two rolls. That will create a gentle curve so there will always be light hitting some part of all that work you did with the pearl ex. That's my 2 cents anyways :)
